If I had forever

Yesterday, Diep came home. Excitedly, she said I should buy the red Mazda Miata. “It’s only $35 thousand dollars.” She showed me pictures of the sexy red roadster that I have lusted for but never bought.

Years ago, she promised to buy me one when she graduated from college. That was when I was 30 and full of energy, zest for life and needed a roadster for the heck of it.

Then she changed her mind. Not practical, she said. How can we carry people? And we would need to move furniture.

In my fifties, the dream came back. We were well settled and have no kids. We can afford it.

“Do you want to pick up women?” Diep looked at me sternly.

Now, I am 68. The roadster would be perfect for fishing. Just me and the fishing gear.

“You should get it.” Diep is serious.

“What do we do with three cars?” was my reply. The Subaru should be good for 10 more years, and then I may not need another car.

Perhaps, Diep finally feels sorry for me. Maybe she knows I am not going to pick up women. Or, maybe she wants me to have some fun.

Anyway, if I had forever, I would get that red two-seater, soft top, stick shift, and cruise down Highway 1 along the coast, one more time.
