It’s a weird world

A basket of oranges sits before me and I wonder
What would it be like if the world was an orange?
It might be a world to some – a small bug might think so, for example, as it lands on its bumpy skin.

Maybe it burrows deeper to find the pith, tasting its bitterness, luxuriating in the soft whiteness.
It might stay there awhile, resting after a long days’ toil.
Buoyed by the insight that it could fly away tomorrow if it wanted to, being that it is so close to the entry of this weird world.

Maybe after a day or two of wandering among the fibrous strings, it decides to go deeper
Sensing a greater reward
A sweetness he has heard about
A thing of lore.

At first, he thinks, “no, where I am at is just fine. I’m not one of those ambitious bugs, like Trevor or Sally.”
And so, it stays.

But days later, with curiosity just too great, the little bug pushes on and digs in
“I’ll just go a little farther,” it says to itself.

And with a burst of refreshment
The little bug gets drenched in sweetness
As it breaks through that thin layer of segment, separating the fruit from the rind –
Erupting in joy and feeling fully satisfied.
